We've been watching DVDs on my Dell 20-inch PC monitor for more than a year now; unplugging, carrying upstairs, plugging in, unplugging, carrying downstairs, replugging. Good exercise, but that's not what Friday evenings are supposed to be about. In the interest of extending the life of the sockets on the Dell, I bought some relief:

Note how it is NOT connected to the cable socket. It's a Samsung LNT4071 with glossy glass (better transmissivity--we can control room lighting completely so reflections are not an issue). We went to the store with Sony XBR4 technology in mind, to do a side-by-side visual comparison with the latest Sharp Aquos. Judy's artistic eyes spotted this one. As soon as the Antique Road Show unfurled a Persian carpet on the wall full of TVs I was sold. Another salesman (not our apathetic one) noticed our interest and enthusiastically told us he'd just swapped out his relatively new LCD for this one. I thought it was a pretty good endorsement from someone who has constant exposure to the latest and greatest and can get it all at a good price. Now I need to determine if it is worthwhile to get an up-converting Philips DVD player for $65. I'll be testing the one at work soon. (At least that gives me a rational reason to return to the office after the great Christmas break I've had.)
