The Joy of Blue

Here in Chicago, blue is not just sad and bad (at least if someone else is experiencing it on your behalf). Here, as a total distraction from what I really want to write about, is Trump displaying an unquestionably happy shade during one of those fake Spring days we had in mid March. (OK I admit to tweaking the saturation a bit using "Photoshop" for iPhone.)
What I really want to talk about, I discovered near the base of that tower, where the blues have a lovely home. However, you won't find the good stuff by looking at the link, because they only advertise the main stage. Downstairs, the Back Porch restaurant features surreal folk art decor, great soul food, and an intimate stage. One can understand that it isn't trumpeted along with the main acts: there is no cover charge! And the bar has normal neighbourhood pub prices! It would be totally unfair competition.
By the time we arrived for our third night in a row we thought we'd figured out the explanation for the free entertainment: that these gigs were promos. But when that show started I realized that this guy didn't need to do free promo gigs. So I sat down to chat with him and ask what gives. (It's that informal; between sets the performers come and sit at the bar.) So here's the thing: lately musicians really are singing the blues. Business is so bad, he told me that on some occasions he plays to just the staff standing at the bar. So I guess there's no way any venue is going to scare you away with a charge for mere live music entertainment with dinner or a drink. Even if it is world class, as this certainly is. The real thing.
The Special 20s do some time travel

So if you can't see the list of acts in the Back Porch restaurant on the website, what do you do? Unfortunately you have to pick up a flyer in person--at least that's the only way I know.
